God Was a Father to to Jesus.

The question was asked, “Did Jesus have a “normal” relationship with his biological father, God”?

Since the birth of Jesus happened around 2000 years ago, we can't be absolutely certain of all the facts, but there is some evidence that indicates that God the Father was very much a real "dad" to His Son.

The Scriptures make it obvious that at least up to the age of 12, Joseph took care of the physical needs of Jesus. However, at around 12 years of age, Jesus was well aware of who His real father was – Luke 2:49. We don't know when Joseph dropped out of Jesus's life, but the indication is that God had direct communication with Jesus at a reasonably early age.

This should not come as a surprise. God, through the Scriptures, puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of the father's role with his children. God, the supreme Father, would logically be the best possible father to his only Son. Jesus succeeded in a way no other human being has been able to do as best we know. This – I feel – was not by chance, but because the rules of parenthood were applied in the best possible way. He was also given the Holy Spirit (Acts 10:38, John 3:34, Mat 12:18).

Today, many sons and daughters fail to achieve their full abilities, because fathers fail to give them the best start in life. God the Father did not fail in the instruction of His only son about the rules of life.

The following five Scriptures strongly suggest that the man Jesus was in direct communication with His heavenly Father. All quotes from NKJV.

Mat 11:27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

Joh 5:20 NKJV  For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

Joh 8:28 Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.

Joh 12:49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.

Joh 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

These Scriptures indicate to us that Jesus, starting before He was a teenager, received a lot of instruction and explanation from His heavenly Father. The key words are “delivered” "shows"  “taught” “command[ed]” and “heard”. All these words imply a face to face discussion. We know that God had this type of discussion with Moses, so why should we expect anything less with His only Son?

There are a number of other Scriptures that add support to the five given above. To keep it neat and simple, I'll sometimes just give the relevant phrase from each verse. Again all quotes from NKJV.

Mat 3:17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

This was God speaking in public, and shows that He does communicate with men.

Mat 9:6-8 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins"—then He said to the paralytic, "Arise, take up your bed, and go to your house." (7) And he arose and departed to his house. (8) Now when the multitudes saw it, they marveled and glorified God, who had given such power to men.

In verse eight, the people recognized that God had given the power for Jesus to to be able to forgive sin. Jesus also knew that He had this power, so I think it is fair to conclude that at some prior time God had told His Son about it.

Mat 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father's will.

How could Jesus know this without some deep understanding of how His Father thought?

Mat 11:27 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. ...

Mat 12:8 “ For the Son of Man is Lord [functions at a higher level] even of the Sabbath."

Mat 17:5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!"

Luk 10:22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."

Joh 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

The word “seen” comes from the Greek #3708, and is better translated “discerned clearly”. Since Moses spoke to God and saw Him from behind (Ex33:23), “seen” as “see with the eyes” can't be what is meant here. However, there certainly were many around Christ who did not “discern clearly” the nature and power of God.

Joh 3:34-35 For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. (35) The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.

Joh 5:19-20 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. (20) For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

If some other man said these same words about his human father, we would have no trouble understanding that the son was taught by watching the father. Why should we understand it differently when the words are about God and His Son.

Joh 5:36-37 But I have a greater witness than John's; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. (37) And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.

Joh 6:46 Not that anyone [in that group]  has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father.

Can I suggest that they may well have "walked and talked" for many hours together.

Joh 8:28 Then Jesus said to them, "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.

This, I feel, is a very strong indication that God had one-on-one discussions with His Son.

Joh 8:38 I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have seen with your father."

Joh 10:15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.

Joh 10:18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father."

Joh 12:50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."

A reference to one-on-one communication?

Joh 14:31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

Joh 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.

Something that we should keep in mind as we look how God the Father was indeed a real father to Jesus, is that Jesus did not promote himself as the Messiah. He left that for His Father and others to do. Just one sign was promised – three days and three nights in the earth. While dozens of other signs were given, and many Old Testament prophesies were fulfilled, people needed the right attitude before they could see them. Some things in the Bible are subtle, and require obedience and searching to bring them out.
