The Last Great Day.

In God's list (given in Leviticus 23) of His Holy Days, immediately after the Feast of Tabernacles, comes the Last Great Day.

Lev 23:39 NET.  " 'On the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather in the produce of the land, you must celebrate a pilgrim festival of the LORD for seven days. On the first day is a complete rest and on the eighth day is complete rest.

A bit like the Feast of Trumpets, the Old Testament does not have a lot to say about the day, but it does establish it.

Since the "Eighth Day" is "attached" or added after the seven days of the Feast of Tabernacles, we can expect the activities of the millennium to continue on into the Last Great Day. However, the Last Great Day takes everything to a higher level.

During the millennium there are still physical humans on earth, at the end of the Last Great Day, only spirit beings inhabit earth.

Because the meaning of the day is over 1000 years away, there is still plenty of time for its full significance to come to the fore. I have no doubt, that as we move through the Millennium, its meaning will become clearer. However, we are not left completely in the dark at this point in time.

It involves the Holy Spirit.

Joh 7:37-39 NET.  On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and  (38)  let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, 'From within him will flow rivers of living water.' "  (39)  (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)

The Bible scholars are divided about just what the three verses above mean - partly I believe because they don't keep God's Holy Days as outlined in Lev 23.

However, keeping clear of their arguments, it is clear that Jesus is talking about "living water" being a type of the Holy Spirit.

Living water.

The Bible does have a fair bit to say about "living water", and it was certainly something on Jesus's mind.

Joh 4:10 NET.  Jesus answered her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, 'Give me some water to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

So - first up - "living water" is something Christ can give.

Rev 7:16-17 NET.  They will never go hungry or be thirsty again, and the sun will not beat down on them, nor any burning heat,  (17)  because the Lamb in the middle of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Notice, both Christ ("the Lamb") and God the Father have functions that will help transform unhappy physical humans into happy ones.

This had been prophesied many years previously.

Isa 49:10 NET.  They will not be hungry or thirsty;
the sun's oppressive heat will not beat down on them,
    for one who has compassion on them will guide them;
he will lead them to springs of water.
When people submit to God and His laws, God is willing to bless them.

Jer 17:13 NLT  O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who turn away from You will be disgraced. They will be buried in the dust of the earth, for they have abandoned the LORD, the fountain of living water.

But when people reject God - He rejects them.

Since the whole purpose of our physical life is to show God that we want to be part of His spiritual family, the ultimate blessing is to be given a spiritual body. In the Bible, water is used as a type of the Holy Spirit, so when we are lead to "springs of water", we are actually given the "living water" that Christ talked about in John 4:10.

A change is required.

Before we can make the transition from human to spirit beings, some changes are required.

Isa 25:7-9 NET.  On this mountain he will swallow up
the shroud that is over all the peoples,
    the woven covering that is over all the nations;

Right now, Satan's deception and lies has the world blind to the truth. It is as though a shroud has been thrown over people's faces, so they can not see the truth.

(8)  he will swallow up death permanently.
The sovereign LORD will wipe away the tears from every face,
and remove his people's disgrace from all the earth.
Indeed, the LORD has announced it!

God is light, God is truth, God is love, God is all the things blind humans are not.

So there has to be a turn-around. God starts this by removing our disgrace (brought about by sin). In other words, God and man are reconciled.

(9)  At that time they will say,
    "Look, here is our God!
We waited for him and he delivered us.
Here is the LORD! We waited for him.
Let's rejoice and celebrate his deliverance!"

As humans we can never make the transition from physical to spirit - but God can do it for us.

The final exam.

During the 1000 years of God and Christ ruling on earth, and the Kingdom of God being established, people will be educated about the truth of God's plan.

People then have a choice to make.

They can either reject God's offer to have eternal life - and have their body and soul destroyed in the Lake of Fire - or they can agree that they will live by God's laws, and then be given the "living water" from Christ.

Those who remain at the end of the Last Great Day, are the ones who have passed their final exam.

Healing waters.

When the Kingdom of God is established, healing waters will flow out from the temple.

Eze 47:1-10 NLT  In my vision, the man brought me back to the entrance of the Temple. There I saw a stream flowing east from beneath the door of the Temple and passing to the right of the altar on its south side.
(2)  The man brought me outside the wall through the north gateway and led me around to the eastern entrance. There I could see the water flowing out through the south side of the east gateway.
(3)  Measuring as he went, he took me along the stream for 1,750 feet and then led me across. The water was up to my ankles.
(4)  He measured off another 1,750 feet and led me across again. This time the water was up to my knees. After another 1,750 feet, it was up to my waist.
(5)  Then he measured another 1,750 feet, and the river was too deep to walk across. It was deep enough to swim in, but too deep to walk through.
(6)  He asked me, "Have you been watching, son of man?" Then he led me back along the riverbank.  (7)  When I returned, I was surprised by the sight of many trees growing on both sides of the river.
(8)  Then he said to me, "This river flows east through the desert into the valley of the Dead Sea. The waters of this stream will make the salty waters of the Dead Sea fresh and pure.
(9)  There will be swarms of living things wherever the water of this river flows. Fish will abound in the Dead Sea, for its waters will become fresh. Life will flourish wherever this water flows.
(10)  Fishermen will stand along the shores of the Dead Sea. All the way from En-gedi to En-eglaim, the shores will be covered with nets drying in the sun. Fish of every kind will fill the Dead Sea, just as they fill the Mediterranean.

The reason the Dead Sea is "dead" (a high concentration of salt) is because much of the water is evaporated as the fresh water runs in, and the salt is left. With an increased flow of fresh water, this situation will be reversed, and any fish washed down the Jordan will be able to survive.

Zec 14:8 NET.  Moreover, on that day living waters will flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea; it will happen both in summer and in winter.

While these healing waters will have a physical effect, I believe they are also symbolic of the healing truth that will go out from Jerusalem.

Mic 4:2 NKJV  Many nations shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths." For out of Zion the law shall go forth, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

A day without end.

The Last Great Day is the stepping off point for the future.

At the end of it, God has selected the humans who have demonstrated that they want to be part of His family, and He has given them spirit bodies. They can move about like the wind (John 3:8), and the second death has no power over them (Rev 2:11, Rev 20:6).

Then, with a loyal family for support and help, God will start the next phase of his creation plans.
